MARTIN LUTHER KING CELEBRATION & SPECIAL SPEAKER
Sunday January 17th at 1:30 p.m.
Woodruff Town Hall

Dear Members of the NUUF,

In celebration of 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, the Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (NUUF) has engaged nationally renowned author and speaker, Debby Irving. She will speak at the Woodruff Town Hall on Sunday, January 17 at 1:30 p.m.  Ms. Irving is the author of the book Waking Up White. In it, she examines whiteness as it relates to understanding racism and cultural issues. She is also an articulate speaker. For a demonstration of her effectiveness, we encourage you to listen to her Ted Talk, “Finding Myself in the Story of Race.” It can be accessed on YouTube. Given the current national focus on the division between the races and the demographics of our own area, this topic is more pertinent now than ever.

Together, at past MLK events, we have reached many people in our community and exposed them to topics of importance.  We are really excited about this year’s speaker.  We thank you for your support of the social justice committee in allowing us to bring such a noted speaker to our area.

We have enlisted the support of  other sponsors including our past co-sponsors:  St Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Rhinelander, St Matthias Episcopal Church in Minocqua, Many Ways of Peace in Eagle River, League of Women Voters of the Northwoods, American Association of University Women Rhinelander-Northwoods Branch, Northern WI Center for Working People, North Central Labor Coalition, along with our new sponsors:  Ascension Lutheran Church in Minocqua, Holy Family Catholic Church in Woodruff and Marywood Spirituality Center in Arbor Vitae.

As a follow-up to our speaker event, we are continuing this topic with an adult curriculum.  Rev. Dr. Erin Kirby (St Matthias Episcopal Church) has training in this area and has volunteered to help gather a group of people willing to take the lead on a secular curriculum.  We will meet shortly after the event to get started.  We will also encourage each of the libraries to do a community read.  If you are interested in being a part of the curriculum workshops, let Diane know. (715-282-5400 or dreupert@gmail.com). Help us get the word out.  Let’s make this the best ever MLK event!
Sincerely,
Diane Reupert,
Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Chair of the Social Justice Committee
